SHOULD BUDDHIST PRACTITIONERS PRAY FOR MATERIAL BLESSINGS?

Wenda20130310B 02:02  [Master Jun Hong Lu’s call-in radio program]

Caller: Is there a connection between one’s talent and knowledge for practising Buddhism and receiving material blessings? How do we maintain the balance between praying for material blessings and accumulation of virtues? As Buddhist practitioners, should we ask for material blessings?

Master Jun Hong Lu: In the process of practising Buddhism, it is natural for a Buddhist practitioner to receive more material blessings. Hence, it has nothing to do with whether a person asks for it or not.  Without such blessings, then you don’t have the vital foundation for success in your spiritual practice.  In fact, such blessings are a prerequisite for being reborn in the Western Pure Land.

Caller:  Many Buddhist practitioners in our group are of the opinion that we should not pray for material blessings, but to focus purely on cultivation.

Master Jun Hong Lu: It’s very simple. During your years in primary school or university, you are advised not to give much thought to what you wish to achieve and just focus on your studies.  In this case, will your hard work still be paid off?

Caller: I understand now.
