PEOPLE WITH HEAVY KARMIC OBSTACLES ARE MORE PRONE TO INCURRING NEW NEGATIVE KARMA

Wenda20160729 07:22 [Master Jun Hong Lu's call-in radio program]

PEOPLE WITH HEAVY KARMIC OBSTACLES ARE MORE PRONE TO INCURRING NEW NEGATIVE KARMA

Caller:

Master Lu, ‘It will be easier to eliminate old negative karma only when one does not incur new negative karma.’ So is it true that people with heavy karmic obstacles are more prone to incurring new negative karma, thereby forming a vicious cycle of karmic consequences?Master Jun Hong Lu:

Yes, you’re absolutely right. When a person’s mind is filled with evil thoughts, there is no way for him to eliminate his old karmic obstacles. He will then incur new ones. This is a vicious cycle. Caller:

Is there any way to break the vicious cycle since he is already loaded down with heavy karmic obstacles? Master Jun Hong Lu:

How does one discipline himself? Through self-cultivation. Otherwise such a person will definitely incur new negative karma because of his desire for fame and wealth.

NOT PRAYING FOR ANYTHING WHEN DOING RECITATIONS IS ACCUMULATING MERITS

Wenda20151004A 05:33 [Master Jun Hong Lu’s call-in radio program]

NOT PRAYING FOR ANYTHING WHEN DOING RECITATIONS IS ACCUMULATING MERITS

Caller:
Master Lu, you once said that we would generate the most merits if we don’t ask for anything specific before we perform scripture recitations. Some Buddhist practitioners will wake up in the morning and start doing their recitations without mentioning their names or making any wishes. Is this appropriate?Master Jun Hong Lu:

When you perform recitations without seeking anything in return but merely to fulfil your daily recitation commitment, you will gain great merits. If, for example, you are doing your recitation because of your upcoming exam, you are merely using the merits for a good exam result. When you do your daily recitation not seeking for anything, you would be accumulating merits. You would still easily pass the exam if your daily recitation is of high quality.

You will be compromising on the quality of your recitations if you keep pondering on the unfulfilled wishes. If you are not seeking for anything, it means you are free from desire. Otherwise you won’t set your mind at ease if you keep thinking “I have to solve this issue, I have to achieve this.” I will give you a simple example. It’s easier to become close friends with someone when you have no hidden agenda. When you encounter a problem and need his help one day, he will help you without hesitation. Isn’t it right?Caller:

Yes, that is right.Master Jun Hong Lu:

If you harbour selfish thoughts when you enter a friendship and try ways to win his favour by treating him to lunches and so on, he will naturally feel the pressure from you and will face the dilemma of whether to help you, right?

When you view from the above analogy, accumulation of merit is derived from non-seeking, which will be transmuted into merits eventually. This explains why we frequently refer to merits as an accumulation of virtuous deeds. When you are seeking something in return in the course of doing virtuous deeds, effectively you are converting merits into material blessings. Am I right?Caller:

Oh, I understand now. Thank you for answering my question, Master Lu.

SOCIAL INTERACTIONS WITH NON-BUDDHISTS

Master Jun Hong Lu’s
Public Talk, Kuala Lumpur Malaysia
December 24, 2016

Question: With regards to our daily engagements with non-Buddhists, going out to eat and drink is a very common way to socialize. However, Buddhists like us do not smoke or drink and only eat vegetarian food. How should we better handle these social interactions? What are the options available for us with regards to social activities? Master Lu, please enlighten us.

Answer: Firstly, Buddhist practitioners should practice self-discipline. Let others know that you are a Buddhist practitioner and that you are someone who observes the Precepts. That’s perfectly fine. At the beginning, others may ridicule you. However, as long as you persist, they will stop picking on you over time. Please remember, if you are sturdy like a pillar, people can only walk around you instead of pushing you. Conversely, if you are not determined, you will be pushed around by others in no time. It all boils down to your persistence. There is no two ways about it.

HOW CAN WE CULTIVATE A STEADY COMPOSURE

Wenda20180624B 00:59
(Master Jun Hong Lu’s call-in radio program)

Caller: How can young dharma followers cultivate a steady composure?
Master Ju Hong Lu: How can Buddhist practitioners cultivate a steady composure? It is through observing the precepts. What is the Buddhist study of ‘Precepts, Concentration and Wisdom’ about? How is ‘Concentration’ in this study derived? It is derived through observing the precepts. A person who fails to observe the precepts will not be able to settle down and calm his mind. Observing the precepts means going through numerous sufferings where we practice restraint and speak no evil, hear no evil and do no evil. Once we understand this rationale, when we are asked to perform a task, we make sure that we do our best. Through that, we gradually move towards the observation of the precepts. We improve on our composure, when we refrain from doing what we shouldn’t. As a result, these life's struggles we experienced have made us knowledgeable and composed. Do you understand?
Caller: Thank you Master. In that case, may we specially make a vow to Bodhisattva to recite the Heart Sutra to target the issue of cultivating a steady composure?
Master Lu Jun Hong: Yes, you may do so. In fact, when you are strict in observing the precepts, composure comes naturally. On the other hand, when your spiritual cultivation is subpar, achieving composure will be out of the question. Hence, people who do things in a sure and steady manner unmistakably possess many years of experience and they developed a personality where they either get very serious in their endeavour or would otherwise rather not do it at all.
Caller: Yes, Master Lu.

DO NOT READ UNNECESSARY BOOKS AND LISTEN TO DECEASED SINGERS’ SONGS, ADVANCE YOUR CULTIVATION SINGLE-MINDEDLY AND DILIGENTLY!

Wenda20160529B 39:36 [Master Jun Hong Lu’s call-in radio program]

Caller: A fellow practitioner admired a very well-known deceased person who was also good and knowledgeable. Sometimes, this fellow practitioner would read the articles written by the wise man. Recently, he dreamt that the wise man was dying on his bed and was clasping this fellow practitioner’s hands for a very long time. After that, he heard the wise man’s disciple telling him: “this wise man has taken all of the power you had accumulated in Guan Yin Citta Dharma Door's practice over the past few years. The wise man also exhausted a lot of his own power”. Master, please enlighten us if this is true?
Master Jun Hong Lu: It is probably true and is very powerful! This is the reason why Master had told you all before not to read unnecessary books! There is nothing I can do if he likes to read such books, just like some practitioners, while cultivating Guan Yin Citta Dharma Door, also pray to all types of fairies and deities at home. Is it better to cultivate one Dharma door or many others? Apart from reading notable articles, even when you listened to the songs of the deceased Teresa Teng, she would come to look for you.
Caller: Yes, previously, I listened to Leslie Cheung’s songs and I dreamt of him.
Master Jun Hong Lu: So, now you see! When you think of seeing him every day, he will befriend you in your dreams and then it will become a love affair between human and ghost.
Caller: I don’t do it now. I did not know anything before; I just felt that the songs were nice to listen to….
Master Jun Hong Lu: When it is nice to listen to, you will be mesmerized by it!
Caller: Master, since this fellow practitioner has exhausted all his power, will his lotus in the heavens drop to the earth?
Master Jun Hong Lu: Probably not. This fellow practitioner will probably read some of his books and the wise man’s cultivation may not have been sufficient when he took the fellow practitioner’s merits. This is just like a drowning person clutching at a straw, grabbing whoever is trying to save him and pulling him down as well. Therefore, when he saw a good energy field, he grabbed!

THE KEY THAT GUIDES US TO ELIMINATE THE VEXATIONS OF THE HUMAN REALM

Master Jun Hong Lu’s
Public Talk, Hong Kong 2014

To practice Buddhism in the human realm is very challenging as it requires wisdom. Enlightenment is the ultimate objective of a Buddhism cultivator. Enlightenment is the key to eliminating the vexations in the human realm. I hope you will truly understand the meaning of enlightenment. If you can come round and make peace with everything and do not be bothered by anything, you have already obtained enlightenment.

RECITING 100,000 TIMES OF THE GREAT COMPASSION MANTRA, THE HEART SUTRA AND THE SAPTA ATITABUDDHA KARASANIYA DHARANI

Master Jun Hong Lu's Discourse (152) March 16, 2017

Q: Master Lu has mentioned that “if we recite the Sapta Atitabuddha Karasaniya Dharani (Qi Fo Mie Zui Zhen Yan) and the Heart Sutra (Xin Jing) for more than 100,000 times, our prayers will become efficacious and wishes will be fulfilled”. Additionally, “if you make a vow to recite 100,000 times, it is particularly efficacious when you reach the target”. May I ask, is the 100,000 times of the Sapta Atitabuddha Karasaniya Dharani to be recited in addition to our daily recitation? Or can the number include our recitation for daily recitation, Little Houses and recitation for Self-Cultivation purposes?
A: The 100,000 times of Great Compassion Mantra (Da Bei Zhou), Heart Sutra and Sapta Atitabuddha Karasaniya Dharani could include those recited for daily recitation, recitation for Self-Cultivation purposes and Little Houses.
Q: Other than the Little Houses for our own karmic creditors, can the sutras and mantras of Little Houses for deceased person or others to be included in these 100,000 times too?
A: All Little Houses can be counted as long as they are related to us, including our karmic creditor, miscarried child, deceased person who appeared in our dream and the karmic creditors of our house. However, it excludes Little Houses that we recited for family members that are still alive.
Q: Do we have to make a vow of the said 100,000 times in front of an altar?
A: Yes, a vow has to be made in front of an altar.
Q: Do we have to set a deadline for completion? How should we say the prayer?
A: You should set a deadline for completion when making a vow to recite 100,000 times. You may pray for anything, for instance, with Heart Sutra, you may pray for wisdom and elimination of karmic debts and so on. With Great Compassion Mantra, you may pray for good health. With Sapta Atitabuddha Karasaniya Dharani, you may pray for elimination of calamities and karmic debts.

BURNING LITTLE HOUSES TO OFFSET CLASH WITH THE GRAND DUKE JUPITER (TAI SUI)

An Excerpt
Reply from 2OR Secretariat to a written enquiry-January 31, 2017

Question: How do we offset the effect of clashing with the Grand Duke Jupiter through offering Little Houses?
Answer: Offer Little Houses addressed to your own karmic creditors in a batch of 27 pieces every month. The prayer should be “May the Grand Duke Jupiter Bodhisattva protect and bless me xxx so that I stay safe in the month of xxx”. This is to be done each month.

For example, you would pray, “May the Grand Duke Jupiter Bodhisattva protect and bless me so that I would have a safe month in January”. You may do this every month so that you will be blessed and protected every single month throughout the year. Don’t be greedy and pray, “May Bodhisattva protect and bless me for the whole of 2017 so that I will be safe and sound as it may be ineffective. The best way is to do it one month at a time. Little Houses offered for resolving the clash with the Grand Duke Jupiter have to be offered as a stand-alone, on a monthly basis.

RISING ABOVE YOUR PAIN AND LOSSES
Through Buddhist cultivation, we will become a stronger person. Do not worry about personal gains and losses.
Let your losses become gains so that you will be blessed with virtue. Turn all your afflictions into an opportunity that spurs you to progress spiritually.
I hope you cultivate diligently. Forget and remove your pain so that you will make progress in your cultivation. If you could be awakened from your afflictions, you will attain the Prajna wisdom from Bodhisattvas.

CAN MERITORIOUS BLESSINGS OFFSET KARMIC OBSTACLES?

Wenda20180504 01:31:10
(Master Jun Hong Lu’s call-in radio program)

Caller: Master Lu, can meritorious blessings and karmic obstacles offset each other?
Master Jun Hong Lu: Meritorious blessings can offset a portion of karmic obstacles, but not entirely.
Caller: In that case, do we eliminate the remaining portions through recitation of the Eighty-Eight Buddhas Great Repentance?
Master Jun Hong Lu: The remaining portions are the old karma that we take along with us in death. This also refers to karma that we cannot eliminate. Meritorious blessings are like an eraser while karma is like black marks written on paper. Although an eraser may remove the majority of such marks, they will not be completely eradicated. Do you understand?

Caller: Master Lu, will our participation in Dharma Conventions help the deceased (within 49 days after death) to ascend to a higher spiritual realm?

HOW TO MAINTAIN A BALANCE BETWEEN TIME SPENT ON WORK AND RECITATION

Wenda20160129 01:18:53 [Master Jun Hong Lu’s call-in radio program]

Caller: Greetings to you Master Lu! I am new to the Guan Yin Citta Dharma Door and I would like to seek your advice on how to achieve and maintain a balance between time spent between working and recitation?
Master Jun Hong Lu: Maintaining a balance between work and recitation is similar to maintaining your daily work-life balance. You have to first maintain the equilibrium in your heart. As long as you want to do your recitation, you should seize whatever time you have to do it. You don’t necessarily have to recite at a fixed time. Whenever you have spare time on hand, instead of wasting it on unwholesome thoughts, you should just stay focused on performing your recitation.
Caller: Noted. Thank you.
Master Jun Hong Lu: Bear in mind, performing recitation has the benefit of eliminating disasters and resolving your troubles. So, you should try to do your recitation as and when you are able to.
Caller: Yes. I was on vacation recently and I have been performing my recitation diligently. During this period of time, I felt a sense of serenity. However, as I will be resuming work in February, I am feeling scared and at a loss as I do not know how to maintain the balance.
Master Jun Hong Lu: Fear not. Insist on performing your recitation regardless of whatever hardship and fatigue you have to endure. Embrace Bodhisattva in your heart and you can be assured that you will never lose Dharma.
Caller: I will do that. My gratitude to you, Master Lu.

SPIRITUAL CULTIVATION IS ABOUT TRANSFORMING OURSELVES

Zongshu20180609 08:04
(Master Jun Hong Lu’s call-in radio program)

Master Jun Hong Lu: To live in this world, we have to take advice from others. Although good medicine cures sickness, it is often unpalatable; likewise, sincere advice given for one’s well-being is often resented. Many people fail in their marriage and many others whom because of their attachments, experience lifelong sufferings without remedy.

We must transform ourselves as after all, the essence of spiritual cultivation is about metamorphosis, where we change to become someone who is unlike our previous selves. It is because of our improper behaviour that cultivation of conduct becomes necessary. Likewise, because our way of thinking is unwholesome, where there is greed, hatred, ignorance, pride and doubt that cultivation of our mind is essential.

GREAT WISDOM ARISES FROM THE STATE OF HAVING NO-DESIRE

Wenda20180622 01:23:17
(Master Jun Hong Lu’s call-in radio program)

Caller: Can you explain this quote you once made, “Great wisdom arises from the state of having no-desire”.
Master Jun Hong Lu: When there is no desire, there is purity in you; with purity, wisdom shall arise. Let me quote you an example. Desires are like the foam in beer or soda. If you want to savour the soda, you will have to get rid of the foam to get to the drink. You will not be able to quench your thirst just by merely “drinking” the foam; it is impossible. The same logic applies here.
Caller: That’s right.

USING MONEY THAT BELONGS TO THE DECEASED TO PERFORM MERITORIOUS DEEDS

Shuohua20180713 11:13
(Master Jun Hong Lu’s call-in radio program)

Caller: Master, if we have inherited some money from a deceased person before we learn Buddhism. Now we would like to use a part of it to perform meritorious deeds. Should we perform the deed for ourselves or for the deceased (who has passed away for a few years)?
Master Jun Hong Lu: Of course, it is to be performed for the deceased. You may perform recitation or life liberation. In this case, the life liberation is unique as the money belongs to the deceased. Should the money be used for life liberation, one is to perform meritorious deeds on behalf of the deceased.
Caller: I understand.

HANDLING OF CLEANING CLOTH FOR BUDDHIST ALTAR

Master Jun Hong Lu's Discourse (Question 235)
26 June 2018

Question: If the cloth used for cleaning offering fruits accidentally drops on the floor, can we continue using it?

Answer: If the floor is very dirty, do not use it anymore; otherwise, you may wash it before using it again. But, it is still best not to use it anymore. After all, once it is dropped, it is considered dirty. It is best to use a new clean cloth to clean the fruits offered to Bodhisattva.
Question: Can we use the old cloth to wipe the table?
Answer: If the cloth was previously used for cleaning fruits, you might use it to wipe the table; but avoid doing so if it was previously used for cleaning statues of Buddhas.

HOW TO ELIMINATE THE HATRED IN OUR EIGHTH CONSCIOUSNESS

Wenda20180720 27:12
(Master Jun Hong Lu's call-in radio program)

Caller: Master said that, once there's hatred in you, it will enter your Eighth Consciousness. There's a question - if the hatred has subsequently been forgotten, will it remain in the Eighth Consciousness?

Master Jun Hong Lu: It should not.  Once the hatred has been forgotten, when you are free of any grudges, and also, if all these are attained through the recitation of Eighty-Eight Buddhas Great Repentance, then it is considered to have gone clean out of your mind.  Without support from the recitation of the said mantra, though you may claim that it has been forgotten, there is a high chance that you will recall the hatred at some point later.

Caller: I understand it now. Thank you Master Lu for answering my question.

CIRCUMSTANCES THAT CALL FOR AND THINGS TO TAKE NOTE OF IN MAKING A VOW OF 108 EIGHTY-EIGHT BUDDHAS GREAT REPENTANCE

Master Jun Hong Lu’s
Q&A Session with Buddhist Friends
Brisbane, Australia
16 June 2018

Question: Master Lu, you mentioned before in one of the radio programs that for the recitation of Eighty-Eight Buddhas Great Repentance, it is better for us to make a vow with a total to be recited. How do we determine the circumstances where we should recite the said mantra five times daily or make such vow?

Answer: It is alright to make a vow of 108 times when you feel sad or terrible and that when you know, you have committed a grave mistake that is unpardonable. Today, let me share with you something new. When you come across a serious matter that calls for your repentance, you may make a great vow and proceed to perform its recitation. In this case, you need not to limit your recitation to seven times daily; however, do not recite more than 21 times.

I wish to remind you that you should never casually make such vows. Do it only when you feel that you needed to sincerely repent in every way as you are weighed down with sadness, and you felt you had let somebody down. Otherwise, making such vow is a definite no-no.

EACH “HIT” TO A DHARMA PROPAGATION ARTICLE SHARED ON THE INTERNET IS CONSIDERED AN EFFORT IN HELPING OTHERS

Master Jun Hong Lu’s call-in radio program

Wenda20160710B 41:57 [Master Jun Hong Lu’s call-in radio program]

Caller: There is a Buddhist friend who uses the internet as a platform to introduce Dharma to others, but less so in person.  May I ask if he can use the "hit" rate of the article he posted on the internet to form his vow. In other words, he will vow to introduce Dharma to a specific number of those with a pre-destined affinity to chance upon the article he posted.  Is this possible?

Master Jun Hong Lu:  That’s for sure.  Each “hit" represents a person he has managed to help - no matter who the person may be.  The help he extended, be it major or minor, is still considered an act of helping others.  Do you understand?

PRACTISE UNMOVING SUCHNESS; REMAIN UNMOVED IN ANY GIVEN SITUATION OR WE WILL BE HURT

Wenda20180603A 11:27
(Master Jun Hong Lu’s call-in radio program)
PRACTISE UNMOVING SUCHNESS; REMAIN UNMOVED IN ANY GIVEN SITUATION OR WE WILL BE HURT

Caller: Recently while reading Buddhism in Plain Terms, I came across a paragraph in which Master said, “In Buddhism studies, one’s mind should have ‘a flagpole that never topples.’ Typically, a person's emotions are affected, and vexations arise after meeting with a small issue — this represents the toppling of that flagpole.”
Master Jun Hong Lu: Yes, indeed.
Caller: Hence, learning Buddhism is not easy.
Master Jun Hong Lu: What does this ‘flagpole of your mind’ represent and what does it mean if it topples? It is a depiction of ‘remaining unmoved regardless of conditions’. When you are under the influence of the five desires and six dust of the world, you are emotionally affected; your mind falters, the wind shifts, the banner moves and your soul wavers. If you can remain unmoved regardless of any conditions, you will have the firmness of mind. When a situation calls for something, you act unequivocally — accord with conditions and do what is right. You should not cause harm to yourself. Many hurt themselves precisely because their mind is perturbed; otherwise, they will not be harmed.
Caller: That is right. Thank you, Master Lu.

GUAN YIN HALL IS OUR “HOME”

Master Jun Hong Lu
New Zealand
8 July 2018
GUAN YIN HALL IS OUR “HOME”

In this world that we live in, learning to emancipate ourselves spiritually is of the utmost importance. Thus, the opening of a Guan Yin Hall is to provide us with a “home”. The Guan Yin Hall we have today can be compared to the spiritual abode during the age of Lord Buddha; it is a place for worship that is rooted in every one of our hearts and that of sentient beings’. Should we feel unhappy or sad at home, or have something to pray for; make a trip to the Guan Yin Hall, perform your recitation conscientiously and pray for the protection of Bodhisattva.

DEDICATE OURSELVES TO SPIRITUAL PROGRESSION DAILY AND GUARD OUR WISDOM-LIFE

Wenda20180511 38:49
(Master Jun Hong Lu’s call-in radio program)

Master Jun Hong Lu: We have to dedicate ourselves to progress every single day; failing to do so means we are retrogressing with each passing day. It is essential for us to forge ahead vigorously in our Buddhism practice so as not to lose our spirituality. For many, life ceases as they fail to grasp the wisdom throughout their life. With wisdom, our wisdom-life is well-guarded, and we will have a positive outlook on life. On the contrary, without wisdom, we are bound to hit a snag that may cause us to lose our life. That said, “life” is but a manifestation; what truly controls it, is a life led with wisdom.

RECITE MORE EIGHTY-EIGHT BUDDHAS GREAT REPENTANCE (LIFO) AND OTHER SCRIPTURES BEFORE THE YEAR ENDS AS IT IS ABLE TO ELIMINATE A LOT OF KARMIC OBSTACLES; THINGS TO OBSERVE ON the 1ST DAY OF THE LUNAR NEW YEAR

Zongshu20180120 00:29
(Master Jun Hong Lu’s Call-In Radio Program)

Master Jun Hong Lu:  Chinese New Year is around the corner.  It is my wish that all of you practice Buddhism diligently and perform recitation. Now, we are moving towards the end of the year which is a time that we should settle all the outstanding trivial matters.  It is best to perform more recitations before the new year, especially the EIGHTY-EIGHT BUDDHAS GREAT REPENTANCE (LIFO). This sutra could help us eliminate a lot of karmic obstacles.

The first day of the Chinese Lunar New Year falls on Friday.  Based on the Chinese tradition, if you are involved in any argument on this day, you would have various argument throughout the year; the same if you are not happy on this first day, you may be unhappy for the rest of the year. That is why many people will take leave on the first day. They believe if they work on the first day of the Chinese New Year, they would have to work all the way through the year!

GOSSIPING BEHIND OTHERS’ BACK IS AN ACT OF COMMITTING SPEECH KARMA

Wenda20150710 01:22:31
(Master Jun Hong Lu's call-in radio program)

Caller:  Let’s say if I analyse and discuss someone’s shortcomings with other Buddhist friends with the intention of learning from and using it to serve as a warning to avoid making the same mistake, is it considered as an act of committing karma of speech, or gossiping behind others’ back?

Master Jun Hong Lu:  Do not do it!  It is indeed committing karma of speech.  Do not try to find excuses!  Talking or gossiping behind others’ back are acts of gossipers.  Do not find yourself excuses, such as, “Oh, I just wanted to avoid making the same mistake.”  Can’t you think over it by yourself at home?  Why do you have to do so?

Caller:  Now I understand, Master.
