ACCRUING MERITS FROM RECITATIONS
I’d like to tell everyone that reciting Buddhist Sutras also create virtues and merits. Why do I say so? Many people may ask, “I’ve been doing nothing other than reciting Sutras. How come I accumulate virtue and merits by reciting only?” I’d say this is because when you are performing recitation, you are making vows which will create great virtues and merits. Am I right?
Think about it: Who are in the the “Heart Sutra”, the “Great Compassion Mantra” and “Eighty-Eight Great Repentance Sutra” that you’re reciting? They are all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, am I right? Whatever you say in your prayer to Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, they will know. This is like making a vow, isn’t it?
When you’re reciting the “Heart Sutra”, you will be thinking, “I vow to cleanse my mind and increase my wisdom. When you recite the “Great Compassion Mantra”, you will vow to increase your spiritual power. So when you are reciting, your thoughts reveal your wishes, am I right?
I hope you understand why you attain merits through reciting Sutras and why reciting Sutras is powerful and effective? That’s because you recite with will power. Without will power, although your mouth is moving, your mind is somewhere else. Of course, your recitation is not effective. If you have such a will power that you want to help take across living beings, there will be a better effect in recite Sutras. Are you all with me?
